Help shape community-led theatre that provokes, entertains and empowers

Damn Cheek is growing and we are transitioning to a charitable organisation – and we want you, our audience and community, to help guide the journey. We’re inviting members of our community to join our Board of Trustees – people who care about creativity, inclusion and the power of theatre to bring people together.

You don’t need experience in governance or the arts – what matters most is your enthusiasm, your lived experience and your belief in what we do.

About Damn Cheek

Since 2013, Damn Cheek has created touring and site-specific theatre that brings audiences and participants into the heart of the performance. We collaborate with communities, artists and local partners to tell stories that matter – and to make theatre accessible, inclusive and full of life.

Why we’re reaching out to you

Our community is at the centre of everything we do – and we believe our leadership should reflect that. By inviting applications directly from our audiences, volunteers and supporters, we hope to build a board that truly represents the people and places we work with.

We want to hear from people who:

  • care deeply about their community
  • believe in the power of creativity to connect and empower
  • bring lived experience, fresh perspectives or local insight
  • might never have seen themselves as ‘a trustee’ before – but are curious and open to learning

What you’ll do as a trustee

You’ll work with our small team to:

  • help shape our artistic and community direction
  • support the transition from a Community Interest Company to a charity
  • ensure our work remains accessible, inclusive and sustainable
  • support decision-making on projects, partnerships and funding
  • attend around 4 to 6 meetings a year (in person or online)

No previous board or arts experience is required – we’ll provide support, induction and training so you can feel confident in your role.

What you’ll get out of it

You’ll get:

  • the chance to make a real difference in local arts and community life
  • the opportunity to develop new skills in leadership, governance and collaboration
  • the satisfaction of helping a grassroots company thrive and stay true to its values
  • a seat at the table where creativity and community meet

What skills we’re looking for

Our current board brings strong artistic and community engagement expertise. To complement this, we’re especially keen to hear from proactive and dynamic people who have energy, creativity and bring one or more of the following skills:

  • finance and accounting – to help oversee budgets and financial planning
  • diversity, inclusion and accessibility – to help champion our core-value drivers
  • fundraising and development – to support income generation through grants, sponsorships and donations
  • business and strategic management – to strengthen operational planning and organisational growth
  • legal and governance – to ensure compliance and best practice in charity leadership
  • marketing and communications – to help amplify our reach and impact, especially if you know your way around digital platforms, data or creative campaigns

If you bring any of these skills, or are keen to develop them – we’d love to hear from you.

How to get involved

If this sounds like you – or someone you know – we’d love to hear from you.

Email us at info@damncheek.co.uk with:

  • a short introduction about who you are and why you’d like to be involved
  • anything you’d like us to know about your background, community connections, strengths or interests

Please get in touch asap. We’re very happy to chat informally if you’d like to learn more first – just drop us a line.

Let’s build a truly community-led future for Damn Cheek – together.
