Maria McAteer is an award-winning writer, as well an actor, musician and an ex-world champion Irish dancer. Half Irish and half Trinidadian, Maria was born in Kensington, London and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne. Maria qualified as an SRN/RGN nurse at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital before eventually moving to London to embark on a new career and study drama at The Poor School.
After winning National Westminster Playwrights Awards for her plays Little Secrets and Catfood (Soho Theatre), Maria also released her debut album Her Night At Noon in 2012. The album contains her own songs co-written with composer Bjorn Dahlberg.
An experienced workshop leader, trainer and facilitator, over the years Maria has led many workshops for companies such as Theatre Centre and Krazy Kat Theatre, and has designed and co-facilitated workshops with Darren on numerous occasions. She is currently working alongside The Brighton Dome theatre and South Down Housing, facilitating drama workshops for vulnerable young adults and older people.
Along with Karen Spicer, Maria is Artistic Director of Brighton Beam Productions – an independent theatre company focusing on new writing.
