Blessed Assurance
By Tony Earnshaw
Four friends. Two marriages.
One underlying struggle.
The conflict between principles and behaviour.
A dramatic reading of Tony Earnshaw’s new novel presented as a special dinner theatre event.
About the show
Tony Earnshaw – alongside a stellar cast, and with jazz band Greensand providing music – hosts an evening of dramatic readings from his novel.
Blessed Assurance tracks the lives, beliefs and relationships of childhood friends Tom and Pete, who become very different Anglican priests, and of Anne and Liza, the sisters they marry.
The production explores marital stresses and expectations, the place of faith in an increasingly rootless world, and the fate of independent investment firms in the city. We follow the story of Tom’s development from teenage Christian radical to liberal theologian, his shift from love-struck student to mature husband and his search for a meaningful faith in the 21st century.
The cast includes Darren Cheek, Debbie Christie and Brendan Murray, as well as actress-singer Maria McAteer, who performs a sumptuous, seductive soundtrack with jazz band Greensand.
